To Dwelling Elsewhere
The beauty and difficulty of art lie in the fact that it usually occurs elsewhere but not here; work, precisely, is to pave a path from here to there. The artists, Jiri, Ma Qiusha and Xu Sheng, portray the future pondering with an immediate experience with art, even encouraging you to peer into the starry sky and look beyond the atmosphere while living in the low-lying land of life. There isn’t a certain theoretical support on this exhibition, but with a stronger visual perception and feeling of novelty placing yourself then and there, as well as the surprising depths of works. More interestingly, after several months of construction in Czech China Contemporary, the MarsPOD echoes the same artwork in a public space in Czech, and seamlessly connects to the video work of “Mars” by Ma Qiusha.
Walking up the circular aisle, viewers develop desires and have the exposure to the rolling red sandy waves on the screen. It doesn’t simply draw you into a fantasy world like in a game room, but touches an isolated part of your heart.
At the corner of the exhibition hall, Recreate Island– installation by Sheng Xu- demonstrates a challenge of the personal extreme experience of observing ‘elsewhere’ from the perspective of others.
Here, I have to admit that the name of this exhibition comes from a book I read when I was small but a name left only in my memory: Living Elsewhere. What’s left by Milan Kundera still lingered in my mind, as the unique gloom of Prague.
At last, I would like to thank Aqin and Jiri for inviting Jing Liu and me as curators and for the support from Qiusha Ma and Shengxu, through which we have this opportunity to gather here, and elsewhere.
